
Certain individuals and law firms have established and funded scholarships and awards to be presented for excellence in specific fields of law and/or outstanding academic achievement or need. Students who have filed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) are automatically considered.
The following scholarships vary in amount and criteria and are awarded annually through the Office of Financial Aid:
Judge Edgar Bassick III Endowed Scholarship
The Judge Edgar Bassick III Scholarship is awarded to a second or third year law student demonstrating outstanding academic ability with a concentration of study in the area of Children and Family Law. The student must have enrolled or committed to enroll in a clinical or externship experience focusing on family law and representation of children.Terrence H. Benbow Endowed Scholarship
The Terrence H. Benbow Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Dean Benbow. The scholarship will be awarded to a first year student demonstrating financial need and may be renewed for years 2L and 3L if the student is in the top 50% of his/her class after the first year of law school.
The CATIC Foundation Endowed Scholarship
The CATIC Foundation Endowed Scholarship is awarded to law students who are to enter their final year and who have demonstrated interest and outstanding scholarship in the field of real property law.The Samuel A. Gilliland Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The Samuel A. Gilliland Scholarship was established to honor his memory with the hope that awards from this scholarship fund will help perpetuate Mr. Gilliland's accomplishments as an attorney through achievements of law students. The awards will be made to law students who have successfully completed their first year of law school.The Fannie and Samuel Glickstein Memorial Scholarship Award
The Fannie and Samuel Glickstein Memorial Scholarship Award is awarded annually during the summer to students who engage in public service work for an organization that deals with such issues as civil liberties, environmental rights, women's rights, the rights of elderly persons, the rights of children, the rights of the disabled, or for the public defender or legal services program.The Linda Ilkowitz Memorial Scholarship
The Linda Ilkowitz Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a law student demonstrating outstanding academic ability and is enrolled in the evening division.IOLTA Scholarships
IOLTA Scholarships (Interest on Lawyer's Trust Accounts Program) are based on merit and financial need and are awarded annually to continuing students in accordance with the Connecticut Bar Foundation's Guidelines for Law School Scholarships. The selection criteria, number of recipients, and the award amounts vary from year to year based upon the allocation of funds. Students will be notified of their eligibility in the fall semester.The IOLTA program was established by the Legislature in 1984 to assist in the delivery of legal services to the poor. The Connecticut Bar Foundation was charged with the responsibility of receiving and distributing the interest generated from the lawyers' trust accounts. In 1989, IOLTA became a mandatory program and was amended to include scholarships for needy students attending law schools in Connecticut.
The R. LoRicco Family Endowed Scholarship
The R. LoRicco Family Scholarship was established by Richard A. LoRicco, Sr. Esq., in appreciation of the excellent legal education his sons, Richard A. LoRicco, Jr. Esq. '86 and Ronald J. LoRicco, Esq. '89, received at the Quinnipiac University School of Law. The scholarship is made to a student in good academic standing with financial need.The Oaklawn Foundation Scholarship
The Oaklawn Foundation Scholarship is presented to a law student with good scholastic achievement and demonstrated financial need.Pollina Family Endowed Scholarship
The Pollina Family Scholarship was established by Robert B. Pollina, in memory of his father and mother, Charles and Frances Pollina, his sister Ann, and his brother Michael. His son, Steven M. Pollina, Esq. '93, is a graduate of Quinnipiac University School of Law. It is awarded to a second or third year student with consistently good academic achievement and a strong interest in family law, particularly protecting children's rights and issues of child abuse.The Morris and Molly Shaiman Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The Morris and Molly Shaiman Memorial Scholarship was established by the family, friends, and business associates of alumnus Milton Shaiman, Esq. '81, in honor and in memory of his parents, Morris and Molly Shaiman. It is awarded annually to students with good scholastic achievement and demonstrated financial need.The Silver, Golub and Teitell Endowed Scholarship
The Silver, Golub and Teitell Scholarship was established by the New Canaan Law Firm of Silverberg, Marvin, and Swaim, P.C., in honor of Richard Silver, David Golub, and Jay Sandak, in appreciation of their law firm's involvement with Quinnipiac University School of Law. The scholarship is awarded annually to a first-year law student who demonstrates the intellectual promise and qualities that would be a credit to the legal profession. Preference is given to students interested in family law.The Myron B. Sokolowski Endowed Scholarship
The Myron B. Sokolowski Scholarship was established by Deanna B. Sokolowski in memory of Professor Sokolowski. It is awarded to a full or part-time student who has a background in the physical sciences and seeks the opportunity to draw on that knowledge in a legal career.
Named and Endowed Awards
Twice each year, the School of Law through the Student Award Committee, holds awards ceremonies. Each fall at the Family Day Awards Ceremony, the faculty presents awards to students based on their performance during the preceding academic year. These faculty awards emphasize performance in the first year courses and recognize the students who attained the highest grade in each course offered the previous year.
In May, the School of Law presents awards to graduating students at the Graduation Awards Ceremony. These awards are based on student’s academic achievement and service over their entire law school career.
Awards are either created by the faculty, a donor, or sponsored by an outside entity, such as a law firm or a legal publishing company. All award recipients are selected by the faculty. Some awards are monetary prizes, other recipients receive book awards or certificates. For additional information refer to the Student Services Handbook.
The Christopher Bannerman '98 Memorial Award
This award was established by the family and friends of Christopher Bannerman '98 who died tragically in a car accident. It is awarded to an evening student, with a law enforcement background, who entered law school after working in the field.The Kristen Ann Carveth Book Award
The Kristen Ann Carveth Book Award was created in memory of Kristen Ann Carveth and is awarded to a student who receives the top grade in family law.The CATIC Foundation Award
This award was established by the CATIC Foundation to encourage and enable students to engage in intensive academic or service work in an area of real property law. It is awarded each spring to promising students who have completed four semesters of legal education and who plan to research or perform legal work involving real property law in a public interest setting.The James R. DeFonce '80 Memorial Endowed Scholarship Award
The James R. DeFonce Scholarship is awarded annually to a third-year law student who has demonstrated outstanding advocacy on behalf of the disabled through a paper or other project deemed appropriate.The Garrett McGarrity Farrell Memorial Award
The Garrett McGarrity Farrell Scholarship Award was created by the family of Law Professor Robert Farrell. The scholarship is awarded at the Family Day Award Ceremony to a student who has demonstrated excellence in the study of Juvenile Law and has demonstrated commitment to serving the needs of children.The John L. Hanny '93 Memorial Scholarship Award
The John L. Hanny Memorial Scholarship Award is awarded to a second- or third-year law student with consistently good scholastic achievement as demonstrated by an average of 3.0 or better, demonstrated interest in a field outside the legal professions and financial need.The Marci Karbane '94 Memorial Award of Courage
The Marci Karbane Award of Courage Scholarship was created by the family, friends, classmates, and colleagues of Marci Karbane. It is awarded annually to a returning student who has demonstrated persistence, courage, and strength in overcoming obstacles in the face of adversity.The Martin B. Margulies Civil and Political Rights Award
This award was established by the family and friends of Professor Martin B. Margulies. It is awarded annually to a student who has an outstanding commitment to civil and political rights as well as excellent academic achievement.The Thurgood Marshall Endowed Scholarship Award
The Justice Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Award is in honor of the late Justice Thurgood Marshall. The award is funded by contributions from individuals, law firms, and corporations, and is awarded to a needy student of color who has demonstrated an interest in the field of civil rights.The James and Margaret Noonan Memorial Scholarship Award
The James and Margaret Noonan Scholarship was created by the family of John Noonan in memory of their parents. It is awarded at Family Day Awards Celebration to a student who has demonstrated interest in immigration or international law, related especially to Irish-American and Irish issues. Preference is given to members of the Brehon Society.The Margaret E. Ryder Memorial Award for Excellence in the Study of Health Law
The Margaret E. Ryder Memorial Award was created by Rosemary Golia in memory of her mother. It is awarded at Family Day Awards Celebration to a student in the study of health law.The Sinoway & McEnery Health Law Award
This award was created by the law firm of Sinoway & McEnery and is awarded to a graduating student who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in Health Law.The John A. Speziale Award for Excellence in Written Advocacy
This award was created by Chief Justice John A. Speziale and is awarded to students who have written the best appellate briefs during their second semester of legal skills.The Nancy K. Sulinski Memorial Award
This award was created in memory of Nancy Sulinski and is awarded to students that are pursuing their legal education despite overcoming hardship or difficulty.The Zeldes, Needle, & Cooper Award for Excellence in Legal Writing
The Zeldes, Needle & Cooper Award is awarded to students for the best memoranda and/or briefs written by first-year law students.
