Law students enjoying the annual Barristers Ball
International Human Rights Law Society

This new law student group was formed in the fall semester of 2007. The founding members, many of whom have travelled and lived abroad, coalesced around a shared interest in international human rights issues – from the genocide in Darfur to international human trafficking to global poverty and migration.

As a student organization, we are committed to generating public awareness about human rights issues; building a community for future practitioners of human rights law by exploring resources and networking with non-profit and non-governmental organizations; and, engaging in public advocacy and direct action campaigns to make a tangible difference in our global community.

Over the 2007 – 2008 academic year, IHR organized several events, including: The Human Rights of Trafficked Persons: A Comparative Discussion of Human Trafficking in the U.S. & Bahrain (November 15, 2007); RightsWork: A Speaker Series (January through April 2008); fundraising and participation in the Run for Refugees 5k Race (February 3, 2008); and, a film screening of Darfur Now (February 21, 2008). Our first year of organizing events and campaigns has been greatly successful thanks to collaboration with the American Constitution Society, the Asian Pacific American Law Society, the Quinnipiac University chapter of Students Taking Action Now: Darfur (STAND), the Albert Schweitzer Institute, and the Office of Academic & Student Affairs
