Time, Location and Order of Processional

At 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 9, all candidates for degrees must report to the Grand Courtroom. Upon arrival, students will be given a card with their name typed on it. If the name is difficult to pronounce, students are asked to print a phonetic spelling of the name on the card. Students may line up in any order they choose. Graduates must be in line by 2:30 p.m.; if they are not in cap and gown and in line by 2:30 p.m., we cannot guarantee participation in the ceremony. At approximately 2:40 p.m., the Commencement marshals will lead the procession and direct students to their seats. Students are asked to remain in the order of line-up.

Students are asked to stand and remain quiet as the faculty, staff, and platform participants march in. During the invocation, men should remove their caps. After the invocation, caps are replaced, and all are seated, following the example of those on the platform. Except for the time of being hooded, students are expected to remain seated during the ceremony.

The marshal will then direct groups to the right of the platform. As students approach the platform to be hooded, they must present the name card to Associate Dean David King, who will then read the name. Students will then proceed to one of the hooding professors to be hooded. A marshal will direct them. After they are hooded, they shake the Dean's hand and have their picture taken with him. After crossing the stage students return to their seats. Once the entire group has returned to their seats, the President will announce the conferral of degrees (By the power vested in me by the Board of Trustees, I hereby confer upon you the degree of…). After he has finished speaking, students move the tassel to the left of their caps.

When the ceremonies are over, the audience will rise for the benediction. Men should again remove their caps and replace them when the benediction is finished. All graduates will remain standing while the Commencement participants exit. The platform party will leave first, followed by the faculty and staff, followed by the graduates.

Alumni Hooding
Students are welcome to have a parent or grandparent “hood” them if that person is a graduate of Quinnipiac University School of Law.
